‘Humanitarian’ policeman Shaukat Hossain sacked

A Correspondent:

“Humanitarian” Constable Shaukat Hossain of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has been sacked.

Shakila Soltana, deputy commissioner of CMP’s Port Division, issued the order on April 16.

According to the police, a copy of the order has been sent to the office of CMP Krishna Pada Roy.

Shakila Soltana said: “Shaukat Hossain never actually worked. He was frequently absent. A departmental case has been filed against him. That departmental case later recommended his dismissal. Not only was he absent here, but he was also absent for 372 days in Comilla. He had been absent for 71 days in CMP.”

The DC added that Shaukat considered the recommended order for dismissal embarrassing.

“His request for exemption was not taken into consideration as it was too late. If he had asked for an exemption earlier, it could have been considered,” the DC added.

The order dismissing Shaukat mentioned that the charge of being absent from work for 71 days had been proven beyond doubt.

Furthermore, the accused was dismissed after informing the authorities in writing that he could not serve as a police constable because he was physically and mentally distressed, had family and personal problems, and was involved in humanitarian activities for the destitute.

Dhaka Tribune could not contact Shaukat for comment over the phone.

Shaukat Hossain resides in Noakhali’s Kabirhat upazila and became a police constable in 2005.

In 2009, he was transferred from Dhaka to Rangamati. He also joined the Chittagong Divisional Police Hospital.

Later, Shaukat finished a three-year diploma and a two-year paramedical degree in addition to his profession.

He has been praised for providing medical treatments to the poor in Chittagong since 2011.

Earlier, the humanitarian police unit was established in 2019 on the orders of then-CMP Commissioner Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman.

At the time, the CMP Commissioner donated T 50,000 from his own fund to this unit.
