Bangladesh has yet to witness a government truly committed to ensuring justice and fairness, highlighting the need not only for fair elections but also for a good governance system, said Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Masood Sayeedi on Thursday.
“Under the current constitution, anyone who comes to power will turn to a monster, driven by the lust for power. Therefore, we demand not only fair elections but also a system of governance based on justice,” Masood, the son of late Jamaat-e-Islami senior leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi said while addressing a rally in Pirojpur.
Participants at the rally called for the immediate arrest of Awami League activists linked to terrorist activities and quick reforms to ensure a fair election.
In his address, Masood who is also the candidate for Pirujpur-1, criticized the Awami League for introducing a fascist rule in the country.
“For more than 15 years, Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic rule has silenced opposition, with hundreds facing enforced disappearances, killings, and oppression. The country’s sovereignty was traded away in the name of friendship, binding 180 million people to India’s servitude,” he said.
He also spoke about the July uprising, which led to Sheikh Hasina’s removal from power, calling it a revolution driven by students and citizens.
“This spontaneous revolution has started a new chapter in the country’s politics. No other movement in Bangladesh’s history has faced such brutal repression, with gunfire indiscriminately targeting protesters,” he said.
He also alleged that every sector of the country was destroyed by Sheikh Hasina through corruption, looting, and mismanagement.
“We hope the interim government will bring her and her accomplices to justice,” he said.
He affirmed equal rights for all citizens, regardless of religion.
He stressed that the rights of all communities, including Hindus and Muslims, must be protected, with equal respect for everyone’s beliefs.
Chaired by Union Amir Maulana Sarwar Hossain Molla and conducted by Union Secretary Maulana Kawsar Hossain, Jamaat leaders, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami district unit Amir Principal Tafazzal Hossain Farid, and Pirojpur District Election Coordination Committee Coordinator Md Habibur Rahman also spoke at the event among others.
