Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday urged the students demanding quota reformation in government jobs to keep patience and wait until any decision regarding the issue comes from the apex court.
“I do believe, the students will get justice from the apex court and they won’t be disappointed,” she said in a televised address to the nation this evening.
In her eight-minute speech, the prime minister said the government filed an appeal against the High Court judgement on the quota issue while the Appellate Division set a date for its hearing as well.
“The court also has created an opportunity to hear the students if they have any statements. There is a scope to resolve the matter through the legal process.”
She announced conducting a judicial enquiry to ensure a fair and just trial into the recent unwanted incidents, including killings, during the quota reform movement.
The prime minister addressed the nation a day after six people were killed and scores injured in clashes among demonstrators, Bangladesh Chhatra League, and police across the country.
Sheikh Hasina said, “It is a matter of great regret that some quarters took the opportunity (movement) to indulge in acts of terrorism for their ulterior motives.
“I believe those involved in the quota reform movement have no link with these terrorists. Rather terrorists created anarchy intruding into the movement. Those involved in such incidents will be identified and punished accordingly,” she said.
The prime minister expressed deep shock and sorrow at the deaths of the six people and sympathy for the bereaved family.
The speech was aired by Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, private TV channels and radio stations simultaneously.
