Sylhet: A case was filed accusing seven people including two engineers of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) involving the death of an army officer after being hit by a steel pipe that fell from under-construction City Nagar Bhaban on Saturday.
Mohammad Ali Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, said an army member Abdul Mannan filed the case naming four people and unnamed two others on Saturday night.
The identified accused–SCC’s Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman, Executive Engineer Ali Akbar, Site Engineer Abdur Razzak of Jamal & Co, its owner Md Jamal Uddin and crane driver Md Sadek, the OC said.
He said they detained 17 people for interrogation shortly after the incident and freed them later.
Earlier on June 3 afternoon, lance corporal Delwar Hossain, who was posted at 50-Field Artillery Regi-ment in Sylhet Cantonment, sustained severe injuries when the steel pipe fell on his head from the 12th roof of the under-construction building when he was passing by there.
He was rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead.
Soon after the incident, SCC Mayor Ariful Haque formed a seven member committee to investigate the incident and asked to submit report within 72-hour.
Though initially the two engineers were kept at the probe committee, later they were dropped out when the case was filed against them.
Later, the mayor reformed the committee with Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Badrul Haque as convenor.
