44 BGB platoons deployed in Dhaka, nearby districts

Staff Reporter:

Forty-four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in the capital and nearby districts to ensure security at garment factories.

BGB Headquarters confirmed the matter to the Daily Sun on Thursday.

Besides, a good number of BGB teams have been deployed across the country to maintain law and order situation.

The deployment came after a female readymade garment (RMG) worker’s death in a clash with law enforcers in Konabari area of Gazipur on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Anjuara Khatun, 30, who worked at Islam Garment in Gazipur area. The victim received bullet injuries while a number of RMG makers were demonstrating in Konabari area last morning for a minimum wage of Tk 23,000.

As her condition deteriorated, Anjuara, hailing from Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj, was rushed to the DMCH where she was declared dead in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the government on Tuesday announced Tk 12,500 as the minimum wage for the RMG workers.

The government has raised the basic wages by 56.25% and declared a minimum wage of Tk 12,500 for the RMG makers.

On October 21, the RMG workers demanded that their minimum wage be increased from the existing Tk 8,000 to Tk 20,390 while the owners have proposed to increase it to Tk 10,400.

Rejecting their owners’ proposal, the garment workers have been staging demonstrations in the capital and its adjoining areas to press home their demand for a minimum wage of Tk 23,000.
