Palm seeds planted to protect ecological balance

A Correspondent :
With an aim to protect the ecological balance, combat the adverse impacts of climate change, and raise public awareness, the voluntary organization ‘Development Efforts from Society and Humanity’ (DESH) has planted 2,000 palm seeds in Shibchar, Madaripur, yesterday.

The organization’s second phase of the tree plantation programme was held in Bashkandi union under Shibchar upazila this morning.

During the event, native varieties of date palm and guava saplings, along with 1,000 palm seeds, were planted.

Earlier on October 17, the organization planted native species of Krishnachura (flamboyant), Shimul (silk-cotton), and guava saplings, along with 1,000 palm seeds, in the Bhandarikandi area of the upazila. A total of 2,000 palm seeds have now been planted across both phases.

The tree plantation programme was attended by “DESH” President Wahiduzzaman, senior members Md. Mohiuddin, Md. Masum Mollah, Md. Sajeeb, General Secretary S.M. Delwar Hossain, Shafiqul Islam, and other volunteers of the organization.

S.M. Delwar Hossain, General Secretary of DESH, told BSS that since its inception, DESH has been conducting various social, humanitarian, health, educational, and awareness-raising activities, including tree plantation. These initiatives of the organization for environmental conservation and human welfare will continue in the future.

Wahiduzzaman, President of the organization, told BSS that everyone needs to fulfill their responsibilities from their respective positions to protect the environment. Tree plantation should not remain limited to mere programmes but must transform into a social movement. With that goal in mind, DESH regularly conducts greening activities, he added.

Local resident and lawyer Md. Mohiuddin told BSS that DESH has been carrying out various social, health, security, and reproductive health education activities, including tree plantation, in Shibchar for 17 years. Such initiatives for environmental conservation need to be further expanded. Welcoming the organization’s initiative, he expressed his expectation to stand by such public welfare activities in the future.

The organizers and volunteers expressed their firm commitment to raising local public awareness and continuing greening activities to protect the ecological balance and tackle the adverse effects of climate change.
