Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu yesterday called for an investigation into why students are leaving government schools for other educational institutions despite free textbooks, stipends, mid-day meals and other facilities.
He stressed the need for teachers to take greater responsibility for ensuring quality education, alongside improvements in school infrastructure.
The minister made the remarks while addressing a foundation stone-laying ceremony at Baniatari in Lalmonirhat as the chief guest. The project involves constructing a government school and a flood shelter at a cost of nearly Tk 8 crore.
“Primary education lays the foundation of a nation. There is no alternative to quality primary education for building a developed, enlightened and prosperous Bangladesh. Therefore, the present government has accorded the highest priority to primary education,” he said.
Senior government officials and local leaders from different walks of life attended the programme.
