Minister stresses knowledge, ethics for lawyers’ dignity

Staff Reporter:

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman yesterday stressed the need for a combination of legal knowledge, professional skills and ethical values to enhance lawyers’ professional dignity and develop competent legal practitioners capable of providing leadership for the country’s fu-ture.
“Alongside university education, practical experience in courts and the legal profession is crucial for developing young lawyers’ skills. Through internships at the Attorney General’s Office, students have the opportunity to gain insights into real-world working environments and acquire the practical experience needed to discharge their professional responsibilities,” he said.
The law minister came up with the observations while addressing as chief guest at a “Convocation and Orientation” programme held at the Supreme Court Auditorium, marking the completion of the second batch and welcoming interns of the third batch of the ‘AGO-UNDP Internship Program’, jointly imple-mented by the Attorney General’s Office and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Bangladesh.
Md Asaduzzaman said the internship program was launched to prepare talented law graduates from dif-ferent universities for future leadership roles. The initiative aims to provide at least 100 interns with practical experience every year, reaching 500 over five years.
He emphasised the participation of students from both public and private universities and the need to ensure a merit-based, transparent and impartial selection process.
“The lawyers must identify various social ills and play an effective role in addressing them. Lawyers are regarded as engineers of society because of their role in resolving social problems and contributing to positive change,” the law minister added.
Chaired by Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal, the programme was moderated by Dep-uty Attorney General Barrister Tasnova Shelly.
Among others, UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative Stephen Rodriques, Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Nicolas Weeks, Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chairman Barrister Zahrat Adib Chowdhury, UNDP Bangladesh Rule of Law and Human Rights Pro-gram Senior Adviser Romana Schweiger and Analyst Jinbo Choi addressed the event.
