The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the prime suspect on Thursday night in the case filed over the death of a tourist who fell into the sea while parasailing on Marine Drive in Cox’s Bazar.
The suspect, Md Farid, was arrested in a joint operation by RAB-15 and RAB-4 at Azad Mini Market in the capital’s Mirpur at around 9:30pm based on intelligence information, said RAB-15 Media Officer Assistant Police Superintendent AM Faruk in a press release on Friday.
RAB said Farid, son of Abdul Hai of South Baharchhara under Ward No 11 of Cox’s Bazar municipality, became involved in the tourism business, including parasailing in the late 1990s, when his elder brother Ahsan Ullah moved to Cox’s Bazar.
Earlier on 1 August, tourist Akshar Souvik Roy, 31, from Khulna, fell into the sea after the parasailing rope detached mid-air due to alleged safety negligence. He was rescued after a delay and taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, the victim’s sister filed a murder case with Cox’s Bazar Sadar police station.
RAB said Farid went into hiding after the incident to avoid arrest but was later arrested and handed over to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model police station along with the seized evidence for further legal action.
