The government on Thursday revised an interim regime decision to observe the National Youth Day on 12 August and reintroduced 1 November for the celebration of the day, the Cabinet Division said.
“From now on, National Youth Day will be observed on 1 November as it was being celebrated previously until the interim government fixed a new date coinciding with the International Youth Day on 12 August,” a Cabinet Division spokesman said.
A Cabinet Division statement, meanwhile, said the cabinet, in a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair, restored the old date for observance of the National Youth Day to facilitate the festivity of the occasion evading the monsoon season.
The past interim regime changed the date to coincide it with the International Youth Day on 12 August, but the cabinet considered the day inconvenient for celebrations by staging rallies or fairs due to generally inclement weather caused by monsoon rains.
The cabinet particularly noted that the celebration of the day in August exposes young entrepreneurs to difficulties in showcasing their innovations and product sales, debarring the expected number of crowds and buyers.
“Unless the youth fairs are organised on any day other than the National Youth Day, the desired public engagements and commercial success cannot be achieved,” it said.
According to officials, the National Youth Day celebrations are funded by the government, while the International Youth Day is generally observed with support from government agencies, non-governmental organisations and development partners.
The cabinet, therefore, approved a proposal to observe International Youth Day on 12 August and National Youth Day on 1 November separately every year.
