The existing organisational structure of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is set to be reformed, according to sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The home ministry held a meeting on Thursday in this regard after the Police Headquarters earlier submitted a proposal for restructuring the force.
During the meeting, the proposal to create 2,037 posts for the metropolitan police unit was discussed.
In addition, the inclusion of 1,370 recently procured vehicles and 156 pieces of equipment under the Table of Organisation and Equipment (TO&E) was also reviewed, said ministry sources.
The meeting was chaired by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Md Manzur Morshed Chowdhury at the ministry’s auditorium.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir, Additional Secretary (Police) Ataur Rahman Khan, deputy secretaries (Police-1, 2, 4 and 5), and senior assistant secretary (RAB-1 and 2) also attended the meeting.
The sources said the Police Headquarters, in its proposal, stated that the DMP requires restructuring to ensure better security for residents of the capital and protection of their property.
A joint secretary of the ministry, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Daily Sun that several hundred new vehicles are being procured for police units, including the DMP.
Earlier on Friday, DMP Acting Commissioner Md Sarwar said in a programme that the force is planning to establish four new police stations, including Rayerbazar and Bashundhara, to strengthen policing and improve public services.
He added that a proposal in this regard has been sent to the Home Ministry through the Police Headquarters for approval.
