A number of 41 poor ophthalmic patients underwent surgeries at Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute (BEHRI) in the capital on Thursday.
BEHRI in association with Vision Care Foundation and Moinuddin-Muktaruddin Welfare Society arranged the operations.
Director of BEHRI Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed supervised the operations which were conducted by Dr Rubina Akther, Dr Mozumder Golam Rabbi, Dr Tasruba Shahnaz and Dr Zerin Parvin.
Earlier, on March 14, a free eye camp was held at Khanarchar Naihati intersection of Bajitpur in Kishoreganj, providing 550 patients with instant treatments. Of them, 150 were selected for surgeries. The 41 operated patients including 16 male and 25 female constitute the first group.
Talking to journalists, Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed said “We arrange eye camps at various districts and upazilas of the country and provide insolvent patients with treatment free of charge. The critical patients requiring operations are taken to the hospital. Such patients are exempted from costs of transportation, operation, hospital stay, food and medicine.”
Ahsan Habib, Manager of BEHRI, said “The cost-free treatment and surgeries are aimed at protecting vision of the poor ophthalmic patients. Eye camps are being held across the country in this regard. Around 2,380 patients have received operations under the scheme so far.”
