Probe body identifies 58 deaths at Shapla Chattar crackdown

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam yesterday said that the tri-bunal’s investigation body has identified 58 people who were killed across the country during the then government crackdown on a rally of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh at the capital’s Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013.
“Of the 58 identified victims, 32 were killed in Dhaka on May 5, 2013. Another 20 died in Narayanganj, five in Chattogram, and one in Cumilla on the following day. All of the deceased have now been identi-fied,” the Chief Prosecutor said at a briefing at his office yesterday.
Advocate Md Aminul Islam said the identities of the accused in the case cannot be disclosed at this stage for the sake of proper investigation.
He added that around 90 per cent of the investigation work has already been completed.
“I hope we will be able to complete the probe within the next hearing date on June 7,” he said.
The ICT Chief Prosecutor further stated that the statements from the family members of the deceased have also been recorded.
“Overall, we have collected sufficient evidence,” Md Aminul Islam added.
The accused in the case include- former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Shamsul Haque (Tuku), Major General (Retd) Ziaul Ahsan, former Inspectors General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque, Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, and Benazir Ahmed, former Deputy Inspector General of Police Molla Nazrul Islam, and Imran H Sarkar.
