Husband sentenced to death over killing pregnant wife

Staff Reporter:

A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced a man to death for killing his nine-month pregnant wife, Aklema Begum, following a marital dispute 26 years ago.

Judge Md Jahidul Islam of the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-13 delivered the verdict; State Counsel Md Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the matter.

Along with the death penalty, the court also fined the convict Tk50,000. As the accused was absconding at the time of the verdict, the court issued a warrant for his arrest along with the sentencing order.

According to the case statement, the body of nine-month pregnant Aklema Begum was found on 26 May 2000 at a residence in Khilgaon, Dhaka. Following the incident, the victim’s brother-in-law, Md Mintu Gazi, filed a case with Khilgaon Police Station.

The complaint stated that on the night before the incident, Aklema Begum had a quarrel with her husband, Jalil Hawlader. He had also been absconding since the incident.

Police submitted a charge sheet against the accused on 14 June 2001 after completing the investigation. During the trial, the court recorded testimony from six witnesses.
