Dhaka-Beijing ties not affected: Envoy

Staff Reporter:

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has said no external pressure or third party would be able to influence China-Bangladesh relations, reaffirming Beijing’s firm support for strengthening bilateral cooperation under the new government.
The envoy made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the foreign ministry yes-terday.
Responding to a question about possible external pressure aimed at reducing China’s influence in Bang-ladesh, Yao said no outside force could affect Dhaka-Beijing ties.
He said that both countries are committed to further strengthening bilateral cooperation and continuing implementation of the ongoing projects.
Yao said China highly appreciates and supports the new government’s “Bangladesh First” policy and remains committed to deepening comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two coun-tries.
Responding to a question on the Teesta project, he said discussions on the Teesta Master Plan have been going on for a long time and expressed hope that the project would be launched soon.
Describing his first meeting with the foreign minister as sincere and friendly, the ambassador said both sides held in-depth and pragmatic discussions on bilateral relations, economic cooperation and key issues including the Rohingya crisis.
He said the recently held 13th parliamentary election in a peaceful and orderly manner is a victory for democracy in Bangladesh and significant achievement for its people.
Yao noted that China considers Bangladesh a comprehensive strategic cooperative partner and ready to extend all support for ensuring smooth governance under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rah-man.
He recalled that the foundation of China-Bangladesh relations was laid during the presidency of late Shaheed Ziaur Rahman and was further strengthened subsequently.
China is ready to carry forward that legacy with the current government, he added.
The ambassador reaffirmed China’s support for Bangladesh in safeguarding its unity, stability, sover-eignty, independence and territorial integrity.
He said both sides discussed implementation of long-term projects, including those related to the Teesta River.
He also said China would continue cooperation in job creation, investment, education and healthcare to support Bangladesh’s self-reliant and democratic development.
