32.88% turnout recorded by noon: EC secretary

Staff Reporter:

Voting is taking place in a festive atmosphere across Bangladesh during the ongoing election. According to the Election Commission (EC), an average of 32.88 percent of voters had cast their ballots nationwide by 12:00pm.

The information was confirmed on Thursday (February 12) around noon by Senior Secretary of the Election Commission, Akhtar Ahmed, from the Election Commission Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka.

The EC secretary said that this average was calculated based on data received from 32,789 out of a total 42,651 polling centers across the country. According to the data, 32.88 percent of votes were cast by noon. Voter turnout in rural areas appears slightly higher compared to urban centers.

Expressing satisfaction with the voting environment, the secretary noted that there has been no situation anywhere in the country that warranted suspension of voting. No polling center has been forced to halt voting. While there were reports of isolated disturbances at a few centers, law enforcement’s immediate response prevented any major untoward incidents.

The secretary further assured that there is no significant threat of sabotage, and voters are safely exercising their right to vote.
