Bringing back Hasina may not be possible despite trial: Asif Nazrul

Staff Reporter:

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has said that even if Sheikh Hasina is tried, it may not be possible to bring her back to Bangladesh.

He made the remark on Tuesday during an event marking the anniversary of the July Uprising, held in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area.

Speaking at the gathering, Nazrul said, “We all know who the chief accused is, who the main criminal is. I don’t know if I should say it like this, but I believe her final days will be spent in India. I don’t think we will ever get her back.”

He added, “If our only achievement is that she lives on with the hatred of the people of Bangladesh in her heart, that is still no small accomplishment. So much hatred, so much pain, so much rage — from this collective anger and frustration, we can hope that reforms will ensure such a ruler is never born again in this country. We are trying our best, and we’re not falling short in our efforts.”

Criticising Hasina’s alleged role in transforming the police force, Nazrul further said, “She turned the police into an inhuman, reckless, and terrifying force. How inhuman must one be to do such a thing? No other force, perhaps except the Israelis in their treatment of Palestinians, operates like this.”

“Our disciplined police force, funded by our taxpayers, has been turned into something resembling the Israeli military — capable of killing us like this,” Asif Nazrul also said.
