Feuding students urged to await solution with patience

Staff Reporter:
Home Affairs Adviser retired lieutenant general Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury yesterday urged the feuding students of Dhaka University and seven colleges alongside others concerned to await a solution of their issue with patience as discussions were underway.
“The problem can be solved through discussions. We can find a solution to this through discus-sions. So, everyone has to be patient,” he said while commenting on the overnight clashes between the students of the seven colleges and the university.
He added “if we become impatient, nothing will be solved. Everyone needs to face the problems with patience”.
The adviser also requested the protesters not to block roads creating peoples sufferings and instead stage their protests at Suhrawardi Udyan.
Chowdhury made the comments while talking to reporters at his ministry office when also asked the law enforcement agencies to handle the situation with patience.
He said Suhrawardi Udyan could be the best place to stage protest while the protests blocking streets would create peoples sufferings causing traffic jams.
“Patients will also suffer. The two hospitals in Shahbagh are the ones which are exposed to ex-treme troubles (due to the street protests),” the adviser said.
The clash that began around 11 pm on Sunday between students of DU and seven colleges in the capital’s Nilkhet area continued until late at night.
Police fired sound grenades, tear gas canisters and rubber bullets to control the situation amid re-peated chases and chase and counter chases between fueding students.
At one point authorities called out four platoons of paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to the scene to control the situation along with police.
