Interim govt failing to act neutrally in some cases: Fakhrul

Staff Reporter:

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has blamed the interim government for its failure to maintain neutrality in some certain cases.

Calling upon the incumbent management to uphold impartiality, he emphasised that holding the national election after minimal reforms is essential to overcome the prevailing crises.

“We have been deprived of elections for the last 15 years. After the 5 August changeover, the countrymen wanted to get a democratic state through an impartial election, but the issue has been made controversial forcibly,” said the BNP leader.

While addressing a programme held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Thursday, he said the countrymen would be denied voting rights if the election is delayed.

“If the interim government fails to remain neutral, a neutral administration will be necessary during the elections,” Fakhrul said.

Referring to his political experiences, the BNP leader said, “Delaying the election in such a situation could allow an evil force to emerge in the political arena and people could be deprived of their rights.”

Claiming that an election is not merely about bringing a political party to power but a process to restore the nation to the right path of democracy, he said, “We are not concerned who is going to be elected but holding the nation election immediately is important.”

Questions have been arising in different quarters over holding the 13th parliamentary election on the completion of the entire reform initiatives, he said.

“If that happens, will we have to wait four to five years for the election?” said the BNP leader.
