Govt yet to decide opening UNHR Office in Dhaka

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain yesterday said that the government is yet to decide regard-ing opening of an office of the United Nations Human Rights (UNHR) in Dhaka.
“We are yet to decide … there was only a discussion … we are reviewing the matter,” he told reporters after holding a meeting with visiting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk at the for-eign ministry here.
He said there was no formal proposal from the UN regarding opening its office here … but “Discussion has taken place”.
He said that Dhaka neither gave its approval or disapproval to the UN regarding the issue. “We are look-ing into the needs of such an office in Bangladesh,” he added.
During the second day of his two-day visit, Türk held several discussions on human rights issues, meet-ing with senior government officials, civil society representatives and other stakeholders.
The High Commissioner is scheduled to meet Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus yesterday before meeting the press in the evening.
On BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s treatment in the UK, Touhid Hossain said she will travel there on November 7, and the interim government will provide assistance as per rule as she is a former prime minister.
